What is awareness?
Awareness is the capacity to observe an external event or an inner experience. It is the essential quality of existence because it is the bridge that connects the observer with their experiences.
Let´s say you are aware of your surrounding area. Suddenly, a dog approaches you from behind, and you can clearly hear its footsteps. You become conscious of the dog because you are aware of the space around you. Then you can choose; do you look back or ignore the steps? Your specific answer will depend on your personality and previous experiences.
If something happens in your awareness, you will notice it and register it in your mind, even if not consciously. In this sense, we can say that awareness is a state of potential: “whatever happens, it will be experienced.”
What is lack of awareness?
To fulfil any task, internal or external, you need consciousness. You cannot drive a car without looking at the road. A lack of awareness can happen because of two reasons: “you are weak or you are distracted.”
As a human, you have a limited amount of awareness available. The more you train this trait, the higher levels of consciousness you will have available. If you are in a fragile state, it is minimal. Awareness is energy!
On the other hand, you can do whatever you want with your consciousness. You can open the balcony and draw back the curtains: you will then be aware of the street. Or you can look at your mug: you will then be aware of your tea. Maybe you can look inside yourself and be mindful of your emotions and thoughts. To summarize, you choose!
The more aware you are while performing your activities, the better your results. The same applies to your life in general terms. The more awareness you put into your present moment, the more of an elevated life experience you will get in exchange.
This quality is usually called presence. When we talk about Great Masters, we typically say that they have a compelling presence; they have a massive amount of awareness ready to be used!
Why is it important?
I invite you to do the following experiment. Count the number of persons and visual elements that try to catch your attention for one day. By doing this exercise, you will realize a simple fact: “awareness is the power that moves the world!”
Self-development is about bringing back power into your life. Thus, self-development is about awareness.
Please ask yourself: how do I grow my awareness? Where do I direct it? There are many valid answers to these questions. If you find yours, your life will transform and rise.
The ultimate freedom
Every experience you can be aware of will eventually end, no matter if it’s external or internal. It is the core idea of detachment and the beginning of the path of freedom.
Let me remind you how powerful you are: you can take off your shoes or your t-shirt at any time. You can change your job, leave your town and break up with your partner. You can change the shape and the weight of your body by changing your habits. In the same way, you can change your inner state. You can get rid of particular thoughts, change the feelings you have about anything and you can even modify your memories about a specific event by just putting energy into it. To summarize, you have the power to attract, change and remove every material or abstract reality in your life, including your body and personality. Bravo!
But, I have to tell you, you cannot get rid of your awareness. It is the essential element of your life, for it cannot be destroyed nor separated from you. Even when you are sleeping, your awareness is there, although the content of these experiences is not retained.
You travel during the night through dreams, and it is proved that we can learn new languages by listening to audios while sleeping. Awareness never ceases.
The only quality which always remains pure and unalterable is awareness. When you come closer to this realization, you will come closer to freedom and to your real identity.
